I recently had the opportunity to try out three different seed varieties from Survival Garden Seeds: Lacinato Kale, Yellow Sweet Spanish Onions, and Little Fingers Carrots. In this post, I’ll share my first impressions, details about each variety, and why I think these seeds are a wonderful choice for both new and experienced gardeners.

Don’t forget — you can also check out my video review on YouTube where I go through the seed packets and talk more about each variety in detail!

Lacinato Kale (Dinosaur Kale)

Known as Dinosaur Kale or Tuscan Kale, this heirloom variety is a gardener’s favorite for its dark, tender leaves and versatility in the kitchen.

Highlights:

  • Produces nutrient-rich greens perfect for soups, salads, or kale chips.

  • Thrives in fall, spring, and even summer — hardy enough to withstand frost.

  • Offers “cut and come again” harvests, giving you fresh greens all season long.

  • From a family-owned USA seed company — heirloom, non-GMO, untreated, and tested for quality.

This kale is both practical and delicious, making it a staple for year-round gardens.

Yellow Sweet Spanish Onions

These onions are a favorite for their sweet, mild flavor and adaptability. Perfect for gardeners who want reliable harvests and a versatile kitchen staple.

Highlights:

  • Vigorous, adaptable, and high-yielding variety.

  • Adds sweetness to everything from fresh salads to roasted dishes.

  • Easy to grow in containers or directly in the ground.

  • Packets include growing instructions and seed-saving tips.

  • Non-GMO, open-pollinated, high germination rate.

They’re a fantastic choice for anyone working toward sustainable, homegrown living.

Little Fingers Carrots

These baby carrots are gourmet favorites, known for their quick growth and delicious flavor.

Highlights:

  • Heirloom, non-GMO, untreated, and open-pollinated.

  • Quick-growing, small carrots (3–4" long, up to 1" diameter).

  • Perfect for snacking raw, adding to salads, or preserving through pickling, canning, or freezing.

  • Ideal for containers, raised beds, or greenhouse growing.

  • Packets include instructions for both planting and seed saving.

With their compact size and sweet flavor, these carrots are perfect for small gardens or families looking for healthy snacks straight from the soil.

My Experience

I love that all three of these seed varieties are heirloom, non-GMO, and open-pollinated. As someone who enjoys both outdoor gardening and smaller container projects, these seeds fit right in with my gardening style. The packets are also beautifully designed and include easy-to-follow instructions, which is great for beginners.

Sharing my gardening journey with these seeds has been so much fun, and I’m looking forward to seeing them grow in the coming weeks.
